Image Area - Portion of paper on which ink appears.

Image Assembly - Alternate term for Stripping.

Imagesetter - Laser output device using photosensitive paper or film.

Imposition - Arrangement of pages on mechanicals or flats so they will appear in proper sequence after press sheets are folded and bound.

Impression - In printing, the pressure of the blanket or plate contacting the paper.

Impression Cylinder - Cylinder on a printing press that presses paper against the blanket (offset) or plate (gravure), thus forming the image.

Imprint - To print additional copy on a previously printed sheet

Index Bristols - Manufactured on Fourdrinier machines from chemical wood pulp. Index bristols are characterized by strength, ruggedness, and erasability.

Index Paper - Light weight board paper for writing and easy erasure.

Indicia - Postal permit information printed on objects to be mailed and accepted by USPS in lieu of stamps.

Ink Balance - Relationship of the densities and dot gains of process inks to each other and to a standard density of neutral gray

Ink Fountain - Reservoir, on a printing press that holds ink.

Ink Holdout - A paper's characteristic to hold printing or writing inks on its surface instead of absorbing the inks.

Inkjet Printing - Creates a desired image on paper by squirting droplets of liquid inks under pressure from a printhead containing one or more nozzles. The printer's resolutions (often expressed as dots per inch, or DPI) is dependent upon a number of factors, such as the number of nozzles; the frequency of ink droplets; the placement of the droplets; and the qualities of the paper used for printing.

Inner Form - Form (side of the press sheet) whose images all appear inside the folded signature, as compared to outer form.

In-Plant Printer - Department of an agency, business or association that does printing for a parent organization. Also called in-house printer.

Inserts - Within a publication, an additional item positioned into the publication loose (not bound in).

Inserter Compatible - Action Envelope can use automated inserting on most of our Commercial style envelopes up to #11 size.

Inside Tint (Security Screen) - Envelope has a dark tint printed on its inside to keep contents protected from snooping. Custom designs are readily available.

Intaglio Printing - Printing method whose image carriers are surfaces with two levels, having inked areas lower than noninked areas. Gravure and engraving are the most common forms of intaglio. Also called recess printing.

Integral Proof - Color proof of separations exposed in register on one piece of proofing paper.

Integrated mill - A paper mill that manufactures enough pulp to supply its own papermaking needs.

Interface - Physical connection between two or more electronic devices so they can function as one unit.

Interleaves - Printed pages loosely inserted in a publication.

International Paper Sizes - The International Standards Organization (ISO) system of paper sizes is based on a series of three sizes A, B and C. Series A is used for general printing and stationery, Series B for posters and Series C for envelopes.

Internegative - Negative made from a transparency for the purpose of making photographic prints.

Inter-Office Mail - Reusable large envelopes usually with string ties. Often has a series of punched holes so recipient knows that envelope contains material.

Inter-trim - Two or more orders combined to trim the machine.

Internal Bonding Strength - Determines how strongly the coating is fused to the body stock. Caused by long periods of hydration, paper with high internal bonding strength resists picking during the printing process.

IR Coating - Liquid laminate coating bonded and cured with infrared light.

ISBN - International Standard Book Number. Assigned by the book's publisher using a system administered by the R. R. Bowker Company in New York City.

ISSN - International Standard Serial Number assigned by the Library of Congress in Washington DC to magazines, newsletters, and other serials requesting it.

Italic - Type with sloping letters.

Ivory Board - A smooth high white board used for business cards etc.
