Tabloid - A page half the size of a broadsheet.

Tabular Setting - Text set in columns such as timetables.

Tack - The cohesive property between ink particles. The pulling power of ink against an adjacent surface.

Tag - Board grade paper used for products such as tags and file folders.

Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) - A common format for interchanging digital information, generally associated with bitmap data.

Tare Weight - The weight of the container and/or wrapper deducted from the gross weight to determine the net weight of the contents. On skids, tare weight is the weight of the wooden pallet and wrapper. On rolls, it is the weight of the core, plug, and wrapper.

Target Ink Densities - Densities of the four process inks as recommended for various printing processes and grades of paper. See also Total Area Coverage.

Tear - This test measures the amount of energy required to tear a sheet of paper. Tear strength can be an important performance factor to a printer or converter of bags, maps, books or envelopes.

Template - A standard layout usually containing basic details of the page dimensions.

Tensile Strength - Relates to the stress and strain to which paper is subjected in its many end use applications. It is defined as the maximum force required to break a paper strip of a given width under prescribed laboratory conditions. The degree and quality of fiber bonding and the type of fibers used are the most important factors affecting tensile strength.

Text Wrap - see Runaround.

Text - The written or printed material which forms the main body of a publication.

Text Paper - Designation for printing papers with textured surfaces such as laid or linen. Some mills also use 'text' to refer to any paper they consider top-of-the-line, whether or not its surface has a texture.

Text Type - Typefaces used for the main text of written material. Generally no larger than 14 point in size.

Thermography - Finishing process producing a raised image imitating die stamping. The process takes a previously printed image which before the ink is dry is dusted with a resinous powder. The application of heat causes the ink and powder to fuse and a raised image is formed.

Thin Space - The thinnest space normally used to separate words.

Thirty Two Sheet - A poster size measuring 120in x 160in (3048mm x 4064mm).

Throat - Refers to the envelope opening which will be sealed by the user.

Thumb Cut - An envelope without a flap. U-shaped cut at open end permits easier access to contents. Often used for job ticket or as negative preservers.

Thumbnails - The first ideas or sketches of a designer noted down for future reference.

Tick Marks - Alternate term for Crop marks.

Tinning - Method of binding by crimping a metal strip along edges of sheets.

Tint - Screening or adding white to a solid color for results of lightening that specific color.

Tip In - The separate insertion of a single page into a book either during or after binding by pasting one edge.

Titanium Dioxide - Chemical substance used as loading for coating material to increase the whiteness and brightness of a sheet and contribute toward its opacity.

Tolerance - Permissible degree of variation from a pre-set standard.

Tonal Range - Photographer term for density range.

Tone Compression - Reduction in the tonal range from original scene to printed reproduction.

Tone Line Process - the process of producing line art from a continuous tone original.

Toning - Alternate term for Scumming.

Toolbox - An on screen mouse operated facility that allows the user to choose from a selection of 'tools' to create simple goemetric shapes- lines, boxes, circles etc. and to add fill patterns.

Total Area Coverage - Total of the dot percentages of the process colors in the final film. Abbreviated for TAC. Also called density of tone, maximum density, shadow saturation, total dot density and total ink coverage.

Touch Plate - Plate that accents or prints a color that four-color process printing cannot reproduce well enough or at all. Also called kiss plate.

Trade Bindery - Business specializing in trimming, folding, binding, and other finishing operations.

Trade Camera Service - Alternate term for Camera service.

Trade Custom - Business terms and policies followed by businesses in the same field and often codified by a trade association.

Trade Shop - Service bureau, printer or bindery working primarily for other graphic arts professionals, not for the general public.

Transfer Key - 3M trade name for integral color proof.

Translite - Piece of glass or plastic lit from behind and on which a photographic image has been reproduced for display.

Transparency - Positive photographic image on film allowing light to pass through. Also called chrome, color transparency.

Transparent Ink - Ink which permits previous printing to show through, permitting the two colors to blend and produce a third.

Trap - To print one ink over another or to print a coating, such as varnish, over an ink. The first liquid traps the second liquid. See also Dry Traps and Wet Traps.

Trapping of Inks - Printing ink property making it possible to superimpose one color on another.

Trim - The cutting of the finished product to the correct size. Marks are incorporated on the printed sheet to show where the trimming is to be made.

Trim Marks - Lines on a mechanical, negative, plate, or press sheet showing where to cut edges off of paper or cut paper apart after printing.

Turnaround Time - Amount of time needed to complete a job or one stage of it.

Turnkey - A system designed for a specific user and to work as an integrated unit. Usually has built-in contractual responsibilities for hardware and software maintenance.

Twin Wire - Paper which has an identical smooth finish on both sides.

Typeface - The raised surface carrying the image of a type character cast in metal. Also used to refer to a complete set of characters forming a family in a particular design or style.

Typescript - A typed manuscript.

Typo - An abbreviation for typographical error. An error in the typeset copy.

Typographer - A specialist in the design of printed matter, and in particular the art of typography.

Typography - The design and planning of printed matter using type.

Tyvek - DuPont's water resistant and nearly indestructible material-envelope seals with pressure sensitive adhesive covered with a peel-off protective strip.
