Varnish - A thin clear coating applied like an ink on a printing press for appearance and protection.

Vehicle - The fluid component of a printing ink acting as a carrier for the pigment.

Vellum Paper - (1) Paper finish that exhibits a toothy surface similar to eggshell or antique and is relatively absorbent for fast ink penetration. (2) A high-grade paper made to resemble parchments originally made from calf’s skin. (3) Social and personal stationery is often called vellum.

Velox - Kodak trade name for high-contrast photographic paper. Also refers to a positive made by contact printing a negative to such paper.

Verso - Left-hand page of an open publication.

Vertical Justification - the ability to adjust the interline spacing (leading) and manipulation of text in fine increments to make columns and pages end at the same point on a page.

Viewing Booth - Small area or room that is set up for proper viewing of transparencies, color separations or press sheets. Also called color booth. See also Standard Viewing Conditions.

Vignette Halftone - Halftone whose background gradually fades into white.

Virgin Stock - Pulp obtained from wood, cotton or another cellulose source, as compared to recycled paper.
