Aqueous Coating
An aqueous coating is a fast-drying, water-based, protective coating which is applied while the paper stock is on the press to achieve finish that exceeds the quality of varnished materials. This water-based finish dries quickly, and it is resistant to smudges and fingerprints. Plus, aqueous coated material works well with ink-jet printing for direct mailers. As with varnishes, the aqueous coating is available in high gloss, satin or matte finish. Unlike varnishes, though, aqueous coating typically covers the entire press sheet, whereas varnish plates can be created to apply on just parts of the image (spot varnish).
